You probably never thought in a million years that you would be faced with something so devastating as a serious home flood. You can usually handle it easily when your home gets a broken window or a major appliance breaks down and has to be replaced or repaired, but when your entire home and everything in it is affected all at once, it is overwhelming and heart wrenching to say the least. So many families have had to face this in recent years. Their home was absolutely fine one day and completely inundated with water the next.

Of course, it can happen that quickly, but a lot of the time people will know that rising water is coming and that they could be flooded. These are the lucky ones who have time to remove some of their most precious belongings. They might have enough time to move furniture on the lower level of their home to an upper level and store some things in the attic to prevent them from being ruined. It seems like a lot of trouble to go through when they are not even sure that the water will come, but it is so much better to do that work rather than risk not doing it and then the water does come.

Some people that live in low lying areas might have had this to contend with on rare occasions in the past, but the weather patterns that have been so crazy lately have caught many off guard because it has not happened to them before. When the rain comes and just keeps on coming, it can cause sewer drains to fill up and overflow, creeks and streams to rise, and yards become saturated and begin to stand in water. Once it reaches this point, any additional rainfall will only worsen the problem.

Sometimes there is nothing that can be done. When water shows up so suddenly, there can be little time to prepare anything. If you can not get your furniture and appliances out, set them up on blocks or anything sturdy enough to elevate them off of the floor. If the water does not come in very deep, it could help save them from getting wet at all. Tie up curtains and draperies off the floor. Take up any loose area or throw rugs, any small items on the floor, and take any electronics out if you can. Unplug everything that can not be moved out like your refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, and big televisions. When water comes in and shorts out electrical items, this is what can usually destroy them. If you are pretty certain you are going to have any flooding at all, cut off your water, electricity, and gas. Doing this alone can save you a tremendous amount of water damage.
